Over the summer I found some wood ant colonies, possibly Southern wood ants , Formica rufa , on the commons. It is amazing watching those little creatures carrying prey that is much heavier than themselves and taking on insects so much bigger. I am not sure if those beetles were unlucky enough to walk into their way and they killed it or if they were dead already but seeing the ants taking them apart in record time was fascinating to watch.
